BPA — bisphenol A — is an industrial chemical used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, present in everything from food packaging liners to drink bottles. The concern is straightforward: under heat or repeated use, BPA can migrate from the material into whatever it contains, and once ingested it behaves as an endocrine disruptor, interfering with hormonal signalling in the body. The evidence accumulated enough that regulatory bodies in the EU, UK, and US have progressively restricted its use in food-contact applications, with the European Food Safety Authority tightening tolerable daily intake limits significantly in recent years. BPA-free as a product claim means the material contains no bisphenol A in its composition — relevant primarily for plastic and resin components such as lid seals, gaskets, and closures.
